1979-1980, Kean College of New Jersey (now Kean University):
I began my college career as a typical pothead who was just starting to take school and learning seriously. Before then, I would excel only in the classes which interested me. Another oddity was how I wound up at Kean College. I had to choose a school while living in my parents' house in northern Germany! Location played a big part in my selection, as I knew I was going to be living in Fort Lee, NJ with my brother; the last school year before he got married in June 1980.
Well, after a year at Kean, my dad said he might be moving to the company's headquarters for the rest of his career. This would put us in Elkhart near Chicago, so I looked for a school in Indiana!
1980-1981, Indiana State University, Terre Haute:
One of the biggest mistakes a minor can make would be to voluntarily choose to live in Indiana! A horrible choice of political environment, for sure. I burried myself in the academic work while there, and tried not to see myself as a criminal for buying beer! It's horrendous that they treat 20-year-olds as children. Garbage in - garbage out.
My first semester at ISU I took a writing course, a humanities course, a philosophy course and an intro to psychology. The writing course helped a lot with my writing in general. My English prowess was strongly diluted by my learning the German language, too! The humanities and philosophy courses were challenging 2000-level courses. They were quite difficult classes for me; yet, they guided me into better study habits. Lots of rote rememberance of artwork, too, as I recall.
Fall semester 1981 was spent working in Germany as I researched yet another school to go to! I made the old mistake of applying to only one university, Rutgers, which turned me down. They asked if other family members attended Rutgers; I had to say yes. My father after WW2, and my brother in the 1970s and 80s. Apparently only two people per family get to go, or perhaps just one person per generation. However, this state of affairs didn't matter in the least, as this turn of events brought Stockton into my life! I never looked back. The academics were solid and the 1500 acre campus is situated in a pine forest with a huge lake, too, while Rutgers was in an almost urban environment. And on top of all that, I got to see the Grateful Dead in October! Wanna see the pictures?
1982-1985, Stockton State College of New Jersey:
First, the key to the terms used on the transcript. It was prepared during the Richard Stockton College phase of Stockton University's on-going manifestation.
And then the grades....
I lucked out snagging SSC Box 5000 for my 4 year stay! Next, I went 7 years and 8 months living, working and moving to California. Then in August 1992, I began my master's program in counseling.
Here's the rundown on my Bachelor's degree:
I only took four classes the whole time I was at Kean! I had to commute an hour and a half each direction, so I was not going to be doing that every day! Getting home late and leaving real early, too?! I attended two classes, twice a week for each semester. It was English Composition and Intermediate German the first semester, and Philosophy and US History 1877- Present the second semester. I have this thing about history in general. I love knowing the information, but I can't stand learning it! Go figure. At any rate, I got my first of 2 "Ds" in my college career for that history course. It was also a two thousand level class taken in my first year.
I always brought along a few joints I would roll in the morning. I'd enjoy one while waiting for the long-ride bus to arrive (I usually took two busses; one from Fort Lee across the river to Manhattan, and then either a train or bus from Manhattan to Union NJ, and Kean College). I had a great place to smoke, too, as it was still a pot-unfriendly legal environment. Completely hidden unless you approached and looked down the unused stairway! The best thing about going to Kean was the learning of the New York City area as an adult. I also got to see Kingfish that first semester on campus (without Bobby Weir). The last I knew of New Jersey had been of growing up to my 13th birthday in WCL, and then off to Europe a week later! Now, at almost 18, I had to get used to my native country again!
The next school year I spent at Indiana State University, Terre Haute! I found Indiana to be a horrible social environment to live in, mostly due to the stiffling legal environment.
